Meropenem trihydrate
Indications/Uses
Treatment of resp tract & skin infections, UTI, meningitis, septicemia & infections in immunocompromised patients.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Doses to be taken every 8 hr. Adult 500 mg-1 g. Meningitis Increased to 2 g. Cystic fibrosis Doses up to 2 g. Childn >3 mth & weighing <50 kg 10-20 mg/kg. Meningitis Increased to 40 mg/kg. Cystic fibrosis Doses of 25-40 mg/kg.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity.
Special Precautions
Risk of pseudomembranous colitis, superinfection, hypersensitivity reactions & cross-hypersensitivity. History of hypersensitivity to β-lactams. Hepatic & renal impairment. Pregnancy & lactation.
Adverse Reactions
Nausea, vomiting, diarrhea (antibiotic-associated colitis), abdominal pain, disturbance in liver function tests, thrombocytopenia (reduction in partial thromboplastin time), +ve Coombs' test, eosinophilia, leukopenia, neutropenia, headache, paresthesia, hypersensitivity reactions (including rash, pruritus, urticaria, angioedema & anaphylaxis), convulsions, Stevens-Johnson syndrome, toxic epidermal necrolysis, local reactions (including pain & thrombophlebitis at inj site).
Drug Interactions
Reduced plasma conc of valproate; contraceptive effect of estrogens. Decreased excretion w/ probenecid.
